Fall 2023 - Revolutionary Characters

This fall at Regent University, study the leaders of America's struggle for independence.  In a series of 8 meetings, participants will discuss famous actors of the age, including Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, Hamilton, and others.  Made possible by a grant from the Jack Miller Center, ten students will receive two free books and will discuss selections from them in a series of discussions with Dr. Reddinger, Associate Professor of Government at Regent University and Director of the Lincoln Program in America's Founding Principles. One book that participants will study is Gordon Wood's Revolutionary Characters.  This is a readable yet scholarly series of portraits of the leading Founders.  In contrast to scholars who regard the Founders with disdain, Wood shows that these men really were great, albeit flawed, men.  Somewhat like other historians such as David Hackett Fisher or Ron Chernow, Wood does not hesitate to show the Founders will all of their flaws, but after having done so, he finds that they were still worthy of careful study and high esteem.

When: See the schedule below for a complete schedule.  This fall's Lincoln Program begins on October 27th, which is the week after Regent University's fall break.  The deadline for applying is Thursday, October 12th at 1:00 PM, but interested participants are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.  After students receive an email indicating that they have been admitting to the program, they may come to Robertson 464 to pick up their complimentary books from Dr. Reddinger.  Some students may hear earlier of a decision, but final decisions about admission will be made no later than October 13th at 1:00 PM. Almost all meetings will occur on Fridays.  Some Fridays will have more than one meeting.  For Friday meetings that begin at 12:00, a light lunch will be provided at 12:00 followed by the reading discussion formally beginning at 12:30.

Where: Participants will receive an email indicating meeting location.  This webpage will also be updated with location information as the program start approaches.
